As a general rule, amphetamines will show a colour change with this test, while methamphetamines will not.

The test works by producing a colour-based reaction when the sample is added to the reagent. Robadope reagent contains a mixture of water, acetone, sodium nitroprusside, and sodium carbonate, which reacts with primary amines in the sample and is then compared against the included colour chart to help identify what may be present. Unlike many other reagent tests, Robadope may take longer to develop, so the result should only be interpreted after allowing at least 5 minutes for the reaction to appear.
