The LSD EZ Test Kit is designed to detect LSD and other indole- and tryptamine-based psychedelics, including DMT, 5-MeO-DMT, Psilocybin, Psilocin, 5-MeO-MiPT, 5-MeO-DiPT, and 4-AcO-DMT. It will also react with opium due to the tryptophan content of raw opium. This gives the kit a focused role in checking for a wide range of psychedelic indoles rather than just a single substance.

The test uses Ehrlich reagent to produce a colour change when a sample containing an indole substance is added to the ampoule. That reaction is then matched against the included colour chart to help indicate what may be present in the sample. A key feature of Ehrlich reagent is that it is highly sensitive and does not react with paper, which means paper tabs can be tested without the material obscuring the result.

The kit is also useful for distinguishing LSD from commonly mis-sold NBOMe-class substances, as no reaction will take place with NBOMe compounds. This makes it particularly relevant where a sample is sold as LSD but the actual contents are uncertain, with the included chart helping to interpret the reaction across a broad range of indole-based substances.
